Spring (March to June)

Spring marks the beginning of Bhutan’s main travel season. As the weather becomes clear and pleasant, the hills and forests come alive with the blooming rhododendrons, offering breathtaking views and vibrant landscapes. This is also the season of many sacred festivals called Tshechus, where monks and laypeople perform sacred mask dances, celebrating Bhutanese history and Buddhist teachings. One highlight of this season is the Rhododendron Festival, held in places like Lamperi Botanical Garden, showcasing the colorful bloom of Bhutan’s national flower.

Travelers visiting in spring will enjoy lush greeneryserene weather, and an atmosphere filled with spirituality and celebration.

Autumn (September to December)

Autumn is considered one of the best times to visit Bhutan. From September to December, the skies are crisp and clear, the air is fresh, and the landscapes turn golden with the harvest season. The views of the Himalayan peaks are at their most majestic, and it’s an ideal time for trekking, photography, and cultural tours.

This season is also rich in Tshechus, Bhutan’s most important religious festivals. One of the most grandly celebrated is the Thimphu Tshechu, held in the capital city. It is a vibrant, spiritual, and colorful event, drawing thousands of locals and tourists who gather to witness the sacred Cham dances, traditional music, masked performances, and prayer rituals.

Routes to Enter Bhutan

Getting to Bhutan is a unique journey, as the country carefully manages its tourism to preserve its natural and cultural heritage. There are two main ways to enter Bhutan: by air and by land.

By Air – Paro International Airport

The most popular and convenient way to enter Bhutan is by flying into Paro International Airport (PBH), the only international airport in the country. Nestled between dramatic mountain peaks, the approach to Paro is considered one of the most scenic flights in the world.

Druk Air (Royal Bhutan Airlines) and Bhutan Airlines operate regular flights to and from several major cities in the region, including:

  • Delhi, Kolkata, Guwahati, Bagdogra (India)
  • Kathmandu (Nepal)
  • Bangkok (Thailand)
  • Singapore
  • Dhaka (Bangladesh)
  • Dubai

These flights offer spectacular aerial views of the Himalayas, including Mount Everest on clear days.

By Land – Entry from India

Travelers can also enter Bhutan by road through its southern borders with India. There are three official land entry points, and they are:

  1. Phuentsholing (West Bhutan)
    • This is the most commonly used land entry point. It connects to the Indian town of Jaigaon in West Bengal. From Phuentsholing, it’s about a 6-7 hour scenic drive to the capital, Thimphu.
  2. Gelephu (Central Bhutan)
    • Suitable for those entering from the Indian state of Assam. This route leads through beautiful southern foothills and takes a longer drive to reach central Bhutan.
  3. Samdrup Jongkhar (East Bhutan)
    • This border connects with the Indian state of Assam as well and is ideal for travelers planning to explore the eastern regions of Bhutan. From here, it’s a long but scenic drive to Trashigang and onwards.
