Bhutan won the Best Leading Heritage Destination award at the South Asian Travel Awards (SATA) 2025 in Sri Lanka, yesterday. This marked the country’s first recognition at the event. Established in 2016, SATA celebrates excellence in South Asia’s travel and hospitality industry.

The Hotel and Restaurant Association of Bhutan believes that the award will increse the country’s visibility in the regional tourism market, potentially attracting more visitors interested in cultural and heritage tourism. Additionally, the association hopes that the recognition may lead to increased international partnerships and investments in Bhutan’s tourism infrastructure.
Bhutanese hotels and resorts won multiple awards at SATA 2025: Zhiwaling Heritage received Gold for Heritage Hotel and Silver for Leading Eco-Friendly Resort, Le Méridien Paro Riverfront won Gold in its category, Druk Hotel and Dralha Hotel were recognized as leading city hotels above and below 40 rooms, Terma Linca Resort won Leading Spa & Wellness Resort and Leading Conference & Meeting Hotel, and Hotel Tashi YiD Wong Grand Hotel’s general manager received the Best General Manager award.
The ceremony was attended by over 1,500 tourism professionals from across South Asia, including Bangladesh, India, Maldives, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Bhutan.
